Choosing The Right Asphalt Shingle

Choosing the right asphalt shingle can be intimidating when you consider the fact you will have this shingle on your roof for 15 to 30 years.  Your home is your most valuable asset and taking time to choose the right asphalt shingle is time well spent. This guide will help you narrow your choices.

Asphalt Shingle

Shingle Style

There are basically 2 types of shingle styles.  Dimensional shingles and traditional 3 tab shingles.  Dimensional asphalt shingles are thick, multi-layered shingles with deep shadow bands that simulate the appearance of classic wood shakes or a slate appearance.  They can enhance the beauty of your home that and will increase the curb appeal or value of your home.  Traditional 3 tab shingles are more economical but very popular. They come in a variety of colors also.  Here are a few considerations to think about:

How Much Of The Roof Is Visible?

If you have a large, steep roof, it is more visible to the ground.  You may want to use an architectural shingle to add texture and dimension to your roof.

Do I Want My House To Stand Out?

Choosing a dimensional shingle will cause your house to stand out.  Choosing a contrasting color can also have this affect.

Is Energy Efficiency A Concern?

Some shingles are more energy efficient and come with the energy star rating for efficiency.  If utilities costs are a concern, choosing a shingle with a high rating may be an important factor when choosing the right asphalt shingle.

Is Algae A Concern?

If you live in an area where algae discoloration is a problem, you may want to choose a dark shingle or colored shingle that hides the staining algae causes.

Choosing Warranty Length

Shingles whether they are 3-tab or architectural come in different weights and different warranty periods.  You can choose from 25 year limited warranties up to lifetime-limited warranties.   Once you determine the style you are interested in you can see what year warranties are available.  Although dimensional shingles appear to be less economical on the front end, they often last longer making them more affordable over time.

Choosing The Right Asphalt Shingle Color

Choosing the right color shingle is often the hardest step for homeowners.  Everyone has a unique since of style and color choice.  Unless you choose a color based on hiding imperfections or algae stains, you can choose whichever color you like. One of the best ways to determine which colors you like is to drive around and look at houses that are similar to yours.  What color roof shingles do you like and which do you dislike? Once you narrow down the choices, you can get samples of the different roofing shingles to see how they look next to your siding, paint or trim.  If you are changing the paint or siding, gather all your samples together to see how they look next to each other.  It often helps to view the samples outside in the yard and under different weather conditions.
